Destinations: Sweeney Cottage

Destinations: Sweeney Cottage

A few weeks ago, Tyler and I realized we needed a mini vacation. We’d both been busy with work and hadn’t had a lot of time to connect as a family. The last time I was in Nashville, I stopped in White’s Mercantile, a cute little retail store in the 12 South neighborhood. (If you’re visiting Nashville it’s worth checking out.) While I was there, the cashier mentioned that the owner, Holly Williams, also had rental properties around Nashville. I decided to look them up while Tyler and I were planning our getaway and fell in love with Sweeney Cottage. It seemed like the perfect spot for us to check out and reconnect as a family, plus it was only a few hours drive from our home in Atlanta.

Sweeney Cottage. How charming is that porch?

The cottage was located in Leiper’s Fork, Tennessee, which is about 40 minutes outside of Nashville. Leiper’s Fork is an adorable small town, surrounded by pretty farmland. Because the cottage was on the main road, we were able to walk to cute restaurants and shops. Even though the town was small, there was a lot packed into the little downtown strip and we enjoyed wandering around and exploring. There's actually a mini White's Mercantile there. I bought a Goop face mask while I was there and enojoyed a spa moment while I soaked in the tub.

Downtown Leiper's Fork. We at at The Country Boy which was delicious and picked up some provisions from Puckett's Grocery.

The house itself was a dream. It was built in 1892 and the owner, Holly Williams, put tremendous care and attention into its restoration. I learned during our stay that Holly decorated the property herself. I loved all of the little details that were woven into the décor and how she used antiques from her own family to make the property feel more personal. The whole design felt so cozy and came away with a lot inspiration for our own home.

The living room. How amazing is that cloud wallpaper on the ceiling? Get the look here.

I loved the way antiques were used in the decor. Holly William's collected a lot of them from local shops in Leiper's.

Rustic glam touches in the kitchen and dining areas. Check out that SMEG!

Mixed metal finishes in the bathroom.

Calming and cozy master bedroom. The antique decor really added warmth to the mostly white color palette.

The best part of our trip was the time together. We decided not to bring computers or iPads with us and banned social media use for the weekend. It was really refreshing to check out from technology for a while -- it’s a rule we might start instituting more on vacations. Instead of staring at screens, we played cards and talked, plus we had a lot of quality time with Luke.

Luke had just started toddling a few days prior to our trip and began walking over the weekend. It was amazing to be able to slow down and experience that milestone with him.

What do y’all think of Holly William’s renovation of Sweeney Cottage? Do you ever take time to check out from technology as a family?
